Soho Loft East River Shore Line Pool Piano and Guest house TKTS Booth, Times Square

tkts

The competition for a new ticket booth in Times Square asked how a small building could compete with its surroundings. This project responds with a clearly structured pavilion, whose rounded shape designates it a "solitaire."  Above, resting on the pavilion as if on a pedestal, are twelve light tentacles which sway in the wind. Delicate filaments against the garish billboards, they glow brighter to mark the hour, then pale as time moves on. The roof detail explains the three most important

ideas: the pavilion roof as an abstract edge, the tentacles as medusa-like filaments, and the entire structure as an oblong clock when seen from the office towers above it.
