STUDIO DESCRIPTION

The Streetscapes studio explores the design and detailing of street objects within a framework of a basic understanding of larger urban design issues. We will try and bridge urban design and industrial design while keeping in mind that this is first and foremost a creative studio.

The class will focus on a redesign of these various elements that compose an interactive environment in the American streetscape, while dedicating some of our time going through material directly or indirectly relating to the urban subject matter. We will seek inspiration in various texts and films on a regular basis, see semester schedule for "Food for thought" on Tuesday mornings.

Coupled with a day trip to New York, we will briefly analyze specific urban conditions of the city and inject design elements to re-create and enhance the street environment of particular sites.

A. Three small-scaled, or object design projects will focus on particular functional combinations and possibilities, making process, material uses etc. We will produce to scale mock-ups or prototypes of the design pieces along with drawings.

B. A final project will create an environment using and expanding on the previously designed pieces, perhaps as a conglomeration of objects in the site-specific condition or a recreation of the components altogether.
